The world the adventurers live in is a dangerous place. Small bastions of civilization protect the ordinary man from the beasts that prowl the deep forests, lurk in dark caves or have taken hold of ancient ruins.
The world's balance his constantly shifting between Law and Chaos. Humans try to keep semblance of order through independent city-states scattered all over the known lands. Dwarves stay in their hidden mountain fortress, content with the relative security it offers them. The Elves are slowly fading into myths as they seldom ever leave their millennia-old enchanted glades. Only the diminutive Halflings can still be seen somewhat frequently on the roads of the Lands. Though less and less humans get to visit them as they keep the secret location of their precious shires to themselves.
In the adventurers' world, magic is a mysterious, rare and frightening thing. Common folks know it exists but it isn't something that you see everyday. You won't find places like "Ye Olde Magic Shoppe" where they sell magical swords and wands but a "curiosity" shop where you can find scrolls, potions and lucky charm is a possibility. Folks from the more remote regions will frown upon the use of magic, deeming it a manifestation of Chaos. Certain temples will even encourage that belief. But even the inhabitants of the cities feel uneasy at the presence of a practitioner so most of them keep their powers to themselves.
In this world, no supreme higher beings get to control the destinies of its people. The gods of men are minor deities, whose influence rarely exceeds the cities where their churches are located. The gods of the older races have long gone to slumber and hold little sway in the events of the current age. The demons, prime agents of Chaos, are battering at the gates of the world; trying to precipitate its fall into the dark void.
Here are some of the gods known to the inhabitants of the lands.
These are mostly worshipped by humans, but some demi-humans have decided to reject the traditional gods of their culture and follow these new gods.
Hlenp: God of plants, grass, and foliage. Worshipped by the pious herbalists, forest hermits and flower merchants. Some individuals derogatorily call him the god of weed.
Vagon: Patron of merchants, businessmen and money-changers. Popular in the merchant city of Caladan where the merchant-guild holds the reins of the city. Some believe that his church has ties with the smugglers ring.
Amra: God of battle and slaughter of the northern land. He is depicted as either a black-maned barbarian or as a black panther.
Seth: Snake god whose domain is in the far south of the Known Lands. His only known temple resides in the City of Vultures but his name is on the lips of many an assassin. His influence can be felt in any sizeable city.
Faelon: A god local to the region of Caladan, Brem and the surrounding villages. He represents growth, agriculture and the seasons. His priests and clerics offer healing and blessings... for a small donation of course.
