You setup camp for the night some distance away from the entrance to Akban. You slowly go to sleep with Turghar, Mordecai, Graveshroud and finally Hilgrim taking watch in this order through the night.
As the others slowly fall asleep, Turghar sets himself next to the fire pit, axe in hand. The minutes pass, then the first hour and nothing of notice happens other than bats flying overhead and the normal sounds of the forest at night. As the time pass, the somewhat brave but definitely not wise dwarf begins to think about how a good keg of beer would help him pass time and make guard duty more bearable. He focuses so much on that idea that he never sees the winged horror dive on him from the blackness of the sky. Luckily he still had his chain mail on and the creature's long beak could not manage to pierce it.
Turghar rapidly turns around to take a good look at his foe. He sees a one foot long with a two feet wide wingspan beast covered in brownish feathers. It has a long proboscis in place of a beak and hovers about four feet of the ground. If the sound of the first strike was not enough, the dwarf shouts for the other to wakeup and readies his axe for a deadly counterstrike.
If Turghar acts first he can attack the creature in melee since it is still close enough to the ground. The others will take one round to wake up and get their weapons.
What do you do?
Mechanics: Monster attempt to surprise Turghar (Succeed) Monster attack Turghar 6 (Miss)

Graveshoud wakes suddenly growling...
Who dares interupt my sleep?!?!
Sitting up and grabbing his mace he looks at the winged beast and wonders what he is seeing.
Daughter of a b*tch! I don't know what it is, but I will wipe that abomination from this earth!
((Attack!))

Mordecai wakes and stumbles around like a babbling idiot for a while ((He's not a morning person.))
MMmmmmm...Humm... what... who... wh... HOLY HELL!
He rolls to the side of his bedroll, grabs his dagger and still lying on the ground he throws it at the beast.
((Thats why you wanted to know if we slept in armor. Sneaky sneaky.))

As the others get their bearings and prepare to defend Turghar from the creature, the dwarf and his foe are still locked in a deadly duel. The flying creature acts first and dive; but the nearby fire flares in its eyes and it misses wildly. Regretfully, the dwarven adventurer swings his axe way to high and also fail to connect.
Before the adventurers can regroup, the beast spins around and viciously stabs the dwarf near his hip right between his chain shirt and pants. The creature's "beak" enters the dwarf body by three to four inches and *GASP* horror; it begins to suck blood out of the poor adventurer.
Mordecai the warrior throws his dagger hoping to help his comrade; but in the frenzy of melee Turghar places himself in the way. Luckily, it ricochets on his mail. Furious, seriously in pain and close to death's door, the dwarf tries to swing his axe but cannot get a good swing at the creature on his side. Graveshroud, fuelled by his god murderous instincts, madly strike with Morbius and HIT! It breaks the wings and crushes the body of the beast. In a gracious finishing move, Hilgrim steps in and pierce the enemy with his long sword. It unhooks from Tughar and falls to the ground dead.
Mechanics: Initiative Party 3 Monster 6 Monster attacks Turghar 2 (Miss) Turghar attacks monster 2 (Miss)
Initiative Party 1 Monster 2 Monster attacks Turghar 20 (Critical Hit), 3 * 2 = 6 damage Mordecai throws dagger in melee, 2 (Miss) Turghar Turghar attacks monster 5 (Miss) Graveshroud attacks monster 19 - 2 (Hooked to Trughar's body) = 17 (Hit), 6 damage Hilgrim attacks monster 16 + 1 - 2 (Hooked to Turghar's body) = 15 (Hit), 2 damage, monster dies

Still panting and mostly driven by the adrenaline, Hilgrim checks around in the dark sky to see if any other creature like this are approaching.
If he sees nothing, he goes to Turghar to check the wound at his side. Knowing that he does not have anything to heal him, he turns to Graveshroud: Hey! You the cleric! Come quickly here to do your stuff! He's at Death's Door!

Does anybody have clean bandages? I think I can make it back to town. What the hell was that thing, did you see it suck my blood?!What the hell is wrong with this axe! I can't hit a bloody thing. Maybe it's cursed?Graveshroud, Hilgrim thanks for helping me. Mordecai, you got to work on your aim. Next time, use a sword or wait until I'm out of the way.

Graveshroud looks over to the others and then over to the dead creature. He walks over to the beast, kneels and attempts to rip the beak off. Once done, he grabs the body, uses his dagger to slit open the belly and bites deeply, drinking the hot mess down. He then looks to the sky and starts to mumble...
Seth, the mighty, you have guided me in battle once more. For this I offer you the dead beast, its beak a trophy for your victory. I am your ever your servant and weapon in this plane of existance.
He drops the beast, lowers his head over the bloody mess and pauses for 10 seconds.
Once done he stands, dripping with beast blood and looks over to the others. A wide, sharpened tooth smile stretches wide.
Victorious once again, Seth has seen to your safety little man. I can bandage your wounds to help you heal, but I don't think it wise to perform any feats of greatness to augment it. It could attract more of the creatures.
Looking up and around as if looking for more...
As much as it would please me to crush more of them, it would not be wise.
