In the quiet town of Brem, nested between the dense forest hills and the Iron Lake, lies the "Flying Beaver" tavern.
There, six individuals share a table in a dark corner of the room and whisper among themselves of gold, glory and adventure. For these six knaves, there motives being far from altruistic, possess the location of the secret entrance to the dungeon of Akban. None really knows what lies in that foreboding place, but all are convinced that many riches are entombed within its dark halls.
As the evening pass, they mock and laugh and chant more and more loudly as Balduin the tavern keeper brings them pint after pint of Riddard's Gold ale, fresh from a dwarven enclave on the northern shore of the great lake. The other patrons, mostly local farmers, give them the occasional odd looks but do not seem to mind them too much. As for the tavern keeper, he will continue to serve and chat with them as long as they pay and do not cause trouble.

I wonder how this tavern got its name?  We should get some sleep if we want to get up early tomorrow to prepare for our ... trip. We'll need to find some help, I need someone to take care of my mule and my provisions. Do you guys need anything else while we're in town? Teekan, sips at his ale trying to make his last pint last until the others decide to leave the tavern.

By my great grandmother's emeralds, this ale is so good! Reminds me of my childhood...
Teekan, I totally agree with you. Have you noticed anybody around that could take care of... what's the name of your mule again?? Maybe we can ask Balduin...
He starts whispering so that only the group hears him: We may want to bring some guy with us so he can help us bring back all the gems that we'll find... Let's find someone not to smart so he won't be able to count his share. With a big grin, he empties his wooden cup and starts scanning the dark room for someone who could "help" them.

Cross my heart, this is a true story …
While drinking with his friends (but not too much as he never gets drunk), Fern is telling tall tales about Ogre and goblins.
Yes, it was me … I usually don`t mention it but I fought Grindel the goblin king in his underground lair of Nilbog … Goblins are not that scarry when you know how to deal with them … This is where I found the long lost recipe of the potion of «Wonderous Things» … but it is not for sale …
As usual, in all the taverns he visits, Fern offers his services as a fortune teller for 1 cp. And for only 5 sp, in very special cases when the client is receptive, he offers to reveal the weak spot of Ogre and the secret knowledge of how to kill them easily.
Do you know about Crodak, the crusader, well his life was spared because he learned my secret… I am telling you, this trick is a life saver… I am the living proof… Have no doubt, this trick saved my life many times and I would not be alive to tell you about it if it did not work. Just ask an Ogre if you don`t believe me … but be prudent doing so. And the best way to be prudent is to learn my trick… Isn’t your life worth 5 sp?

Kughor easily notices three men sitting all alone in the room as potential candidates.
The first is a young fellow dressed in the brown outfit common to workmen of low stature. He gives occasional looks to Balduin while he sips on his small wooden cup.
The second is a black clad man sitting by the bar counter, his left hand never leaving the hilt of his dagger.
And the last one his a jittery fellow who constantly looks over his shoulder.
Whether they are interested or not in what the dwarven warrior may propose, he does not know.

Keltin finishes his ale and burps very loudly. He then proceeds to spit on the ground, an habit he must have done quite a lot over the night because the ground around him looks like a target zone.
"Fern, you still crack me up after all this time.", he says, giving the mage a very manly slap/hug, "Your mouth works so fast nobody catches a thing you say. I still love you though., he sniffs the air, "I'm sure you're gonna find someone who's willing to pay, if only to have a good laugh."
Keltin puts his left pinky in his ear, shakes and brings it to his nose to smell, "Okay Kughor, which one of those three is it gonna be? I vote for the meanest ((the second one)), he looks like he could handle an Ogre or at least Fern telling him how to defeat one."

Keltin, did you just do your ear trick? Don't overuse it, one day, it just won't work! So far, it always managed to guide us, heck, it did brought us to the source of information that gave us the location of the "you-know-what". But one day...
Kughor now slowly turns his head towards the counter and takes a long look at the man in black.
If Keltin's ear says that he's the one... He gets up and prepares to go towards the counter...

Teekan looks at Kughor. Hey, be careful when you approach that guy. He may want to sell you a trick to defeat goblins. All kidding aside, be careful. Should we ask about the you_know_what, see if anyone has ever returned? Now looking at the others. I don't know if I should leave Daisy here, or if I can hire someone to watch her at the entrance. She can carry quite a lot, and doesn't eat much. |

Firali sits quietly off to one side of the tavern watching his comrades discussing in what he deems as their usual silly way while sipping a goblet of hot green tea.
Humans and Dwarves, I will never understand their unruly ways and lack of discipline while in public. To act the fool alone in the woods is one thing, to act the fool in this place could cost us dearly... Monkeys indeed.
He lifts his goblet of tea and slowly makes his way to the bar counter in order to be seated before Kughor arrives. Firali sits two stools over from the man in black and calls for the keep to bring another drink.
If this turns badly with Kughor I shall be ready with my sword in order to pull Kughor out of mischief again!
Firali sits casually, not disturbing anyone, but is listening accutely and waiting.

As Kughor is heading toward the black clad man sitting at the bar, Fern momentarily stops his usual mombo-jombo talking and lowers his voice to talk to his friends.
Eh … Teekan, Keltin … listen to me for a second. Kughor is a big boy; he can handle the black clad man whatever is in store. What I worry about is our friend Firali. You know him, the guy can’t help himself; he just moves up the bar toward the man. As usual, he probably thinks something is a foot. I don’t know what he has in mind this time but remember when he almost killed a street actor thinking he was an evil wizard just because the poor guy was dressed in black with funny tattoos. We almost end up in jail. I am telling you, this pointed ear tea drinker is a loose cannon and we don’t need exposure… specially now.
This dude is just too clean, too fancy. I guess I could get used to the pointed ears, but the tea drinking, this is too much … the guy is a weirdo.
