For sure, Keltin’s ear trick is not good enough for Teekan ...

Firali steps down from the bar and follows Kughor with his new "friend". As he follows them back to the table he watches as Fern returns from the kitchen door.
I wonder what Fern and his Sapien friend were up to back there. I hope it wasn't a quest for more food.
Once Kughor and Morstad have spoken Firali sits at the table. Listening to Teekan, Firali bows and shakes his head very slightly.
Looking back up towards Teekan, Firali says is a calm, soothing tone... Teekan, I think you are digging too deep, and a hole that deep is difficult to climb out of, especially when a 3 meter tall black clad man is shoveling dirt back into the hole.
Morstad, you stature indicates that you are a capable adversary and the look about you speaks of adventure. Your rewards for questing with us can be great, or the cost to your life even greater. There are many perils on the journey we would like to hire you for. If gold is what you seek then gold you shall receive. As of now we are not a rich band, but if you accept to help us, then no richer a group will you have followed!

Morstad smirks at Teekan, "I'll answers some of your question, my little nosy hole-dweller friend."
He then goes to explain that he was hired as a guard on a caravan from Kaldrvik to Brem. The caravan was attacked during the trip by a band of marauding orcs and only him and one of the merchant survived the attack. They took the only remaining horse and tried to rally the town of Brem but the merchant succumbed to his wounds during the ride. He says that because of that, his equipment is what he has on himself: a dagger and his black clothes. The equipment required would depend on the details of the job to accomplish but he precise that whatever it may be, he needs at least a new bastard or two-handed sword.
"Elf, a smart man normally has to know about the risks and the potential benefits before embarking on an adventure. You and your kind may not care about such details since you live for so long... or maybe you're just not smart.", he says with a big smile on his lips.

Firali glances down to his drink, pauses, then takes a sip. Slowly raising his gaze to Morstad, a very slight smile on his lips...
Morstad, one of the reasons "our kind" live so long is due to the fact that we see, hear and perceive things that others do not. We also collect proper information and analyze it before we act. Being smart is part of the equation, but realizing what is in plain sight before of one’s self is another.
You have before you a motley crew of adventurers, seeking aid for a quest that is obviously perilous. One would tend to think that there must be reward of significant value at the end of the journey. What band of fools would go to such lengths for no good reason?
Our kind also uses judgment based on facts as well as instinct to make choices. I would think that such a seasoned traveller and adventurer as yourself would tend towards the same type of reasoning seeing as you have survived the challenges that were set before you in the past. Do I ere?

"Well until I see you rolling in a pile of gems and platinum pieces, I have no more reason to believe you than the harlot who told me that the itching would stop after a hot bath."
Morstad takes on a more serious expression and, looking straight at Firali and then at each of the other persons at the table, says: "My services will cost four pieces of gold per day, plus the cost of rations, lodging and of acquiring new equipment. That is if you want me to be a part of the action."
((BTW, this is pretty standard fare for a man-at-arm. See the S&W:CR p. 24 if you do not believe me.))

Fern ears were buzzing ... So many words. If Teekan was digging a deep hole, Firali was piling dirt to build a mountain. Who needs hirelings?
Bla, bla, bla ... I am not sure old Fern understood everything you said Firali, but it would sound great if you put music to it.
Looking at Morstad, he added.
Damn, I would offer my services for half that price. I don’t know about my friends but I sure can’t afford your services.
For sure you are not asking to get paid and also get your share of the loot ... We will take the same risk as you and we don’t get paid. Hirelings don’t get any share of the ... Fern lower his voice ... Treasure. If you want a part of the goods, you have to become a partner like every one of us. And your contribution is yourself. Same things for the information about the quest, we only share it with partners. Hirelings get paid, and do what they must for the money they get. No question asked.
That being said, partners help each other; I am sure we can procure you a new Bastard.
So what do you say partner?

Keltin comes back, watches and does what he does best: he scratches the top of his head and looks stupid. He does make a gesture to Fern, something that says "We'll discuss later."
Who needs hirelings?
((Keltin will inform the party about the moon metal later and ask them if any of them knows what this is, even the new guy if he joins. Keltin suggests getting informed at the monastery if nothing else happens.))

"Alright..." Morstad says as he clasps his hands loudly.
"Here's what he sums up to. Either you pay me my wage and I'll be your bitch whatever's the job. Or you give me details about the task at hands and I'll take a full share of the profits. Or I go my own way and I leave you to your own device. But in the first two cases, I need better equipment if what you're planning involves anything other than helping grannies cross the streets.

Morstad, I too am cautious. I think it shows wisdom, and I think you would agree that the questions I asked are just to make sure we all know what we are getting into. I would like to verify some of your credentials before we make anything official, but if my partners think I am over-cautious and want to forgo this precaution, then so be it. I would prefer to have you an equal partner in this venture as well, but either way, I would welcome your help. As a sign of our sincerity, I have no problem in paying for your equipment. Like Fern said, the risk may be greater, but the reward may very well be worth it. Let us know if you all you want is a job, or if you want partners in a grand adventure.

Finding all this talk annoying, Fern look at Morstad and said:
Ok big guy, we won’t spend all evening talking about this. Unlike my verbally inclined friends, you are a man of few words, an action man, so let’s cut to the chest. It was offered twice already. As a hireling you will get your Bastard and be paid by the day. Any other equipment we buy is ours and must be returned before we part. And we will be in no obligation to tell you where we are heading or for what purpose. Now, as a partner, you won’t get paid but we will split everything equally with you. We will buy your Bastard, pay for half your needs in equipment and lend you the money for the other half. You can repay us upon returning from our first mission.
Looking at his friends he added:
This is what we have to offer, it won’t get better than that.
Looking back at Morstad
You know this is a fair and good deal, so let’s cut the craps. What will it be? Are you interested?
